Media

The sector at a glance

Media is the business of assembling an audience and converting its attention into money — news and magazine publishing, broadcast television and radio, streaming video and audio, podcasting, newsletters, and the creator-owned businesses that now compete with all of them. The economics run on two engines that pull in opposite directions: advertising, which rewards scale and cheap reach, and reader or subscriber revenue, which rewards depth, habit and trust. Between them sits distribution, which media companies do not own — search, social, app stores, smart TVs and now AI assistants decide who ever sees the work. The buyers are publishers, editors and heads of audience, broadcast and station groups, streaming and podcast operators, agency and brand marketers buying the inventory, and independent creators running one-person publishing companies; every one of them is deciding between chasing platform reach and building a direct relationship they control, under referral traffic that no longer arrives, ad prices that keep compressing, and an AI layer that answers the question the article used to answer.
